I like design. I enjoy new technology. I am a sucker for a new cleaning product. In other words, I like to buy stuff. Even though I am not much of a mall shopper, I am often on Amazon and while I started with purchasing too many books, my habit quickly grew.
It is part of the American way and frankly, it is fun.
I will never forget when my toddler, seated in front of the TV pointed at the screen and said, “I want that.” It was holiday time and the networks had more commercials on than usual. As a new mom, I looked over quickly to see what my son wanted so I could add it to the growing list. But, I was surprised to see that his “want” was a chainsaw. Yes, a real chainsaw. He didn’t know what a chainsaw was but he already knew, life was about wanting.
I experienced this same wanting when I went to Michael’s. I purchased 4 things I wanted and then promptly forgot the bag in the car for a week. These items were my chainsaw – I saw them and I wanted them but well, not really.
Over the next weeks I will be sharing thoughts on how we spend, how we save and how there is a better way. I hope you will join in the conversation.
Today’s question: What was the last (non food) item you purchased? Why did you buy it? How do you feel about that purchase today?
