I was blessed to grow up in a family that valued disagreements. We didn’t see things the same and my parent’s cultivated our individuality. Our dinner conversations were a mixture of theological, political and baseball debates. I loved it.
So I was surprised to learn that not all families did this free-for-all family dinner debate. And even more surprising: some families didn’t like disagreements at all.
This week in worship we finish our series, Rooted. We have been talking about why the church matters and what it means to be the church. This week we look at how the church is called to unity not uniformity. What is the difference?
Uniformity holds tightly to agreement. It is suspicious of differences. It needs sameness.
Unity is about coming together over what matters & holding tight to it. Unity doesn’t major in the minors, but seeks to remember: what really matters here?
Churches do best when they are united but not uniform. They get that people will see things in many ways but that Jesus and his mission are what is foundational to the whole church. When we remember the true focus of the church, differences on other matters are less central.
Join in this week as we explore this important topic for today’s people. Sunday at 9 and 10:30 AM. – See you then, Rev. Nicole
