When I was a child I began gardening. This was pre-Home Depot days, all we had were small local nurseries and so my Mom, who also loved to garden, took me. I picked out plants to grow and friends of my parents gave me plants for my collection. I displayed everything on an old ladder I found in the garage.
Thus began my love of watching things grow.
Throughout my life I have had the pleasure of watching children grow, growing several gardens, and being a partner with churches in their growth. The last five years has enabled me to work with pastors and churches in Southern California and Hawaii to grow new ministries and strengthen existing churches. Growth is just my thing, it is the thread God has woven throughout my life, starting when I was a child and continuing through today.
What is the thread God has woven throughout your life?
I see various threads among friends and family: I have a friend who has been an advocate for outsiders his whole life. This is his thread. Another friend who felt the call of beauty and design and has worked in creating spaces that feed the soul. This is her thread. What is yours?
Here are some questions to think about as you look for the thread God is weaving throughout your life:
- What did I love to do as a child?
- What activity gets me out of bed in the morning?
- What feeds my soul and makes me more of who God calls me to be?
The importance of the thread God has woven in my life gives me direction in what I do with my energy. It has helped me see that if I am in a situation where the status quo is king, I probably should find another place. And I know I am in the right place when I am with those who want to move forward and grow toward the future.
Knowing your thread is a tremendously freeing thing. I hope you will find yours!
